Whispered interpreting (also known as chuchotage) is a special form of simultaneous interpreting, which is done without the use of technical equipment. The listener receives the interpretation whispered directly into their ear. Therefore, this type of interpreting is only suitable for a maximum of two people. As with simultaneous interpreting, the interpreters alternate every 20-30 minutes.

The distraction from noise in the room can be very stressful for both the listeners and interpreters, however, so whispered interpreting should only be used in exceptional cases and not for longer events.

For visits and tours, a tour guide system is often used. This is sometimes also referred to as a whispering device. In this way, multiple visitors can listen to the interpretation using headphones and receiving equipment.
